Summary

In May 2022 the Landscape Foundation of Australia received a NAB Foundation Community Grant for a project in Uralla, in the New England region of New South Wales: Keeping Uralla Summers Cool. Working with ZNET Uralla, the aim was to build the community's understanding of what rising temperatures and extreme heat mean for health and the local environment.

Through a series of workshops, residents identified ways to build resilience and keep people safe and comfortable in hotter conditions. Along the way the group reached a conclusion that reshaped the project: the issues were broader than keeping Uralla cool. Shade, streetscapes, open space and the general environment were all bound up with how liveable the town would be in coming decades — and the report was retitled accordingly.

For councils and community groups elsewhere, the value lies as much in the method as the findings: a documented account of how a small community moved from general concern about heat to specific priorities it could advocate for, with assessments carried out by workshop members themselves.

The five priority actions

  • A Plan of Management for the sports complex
  • A Uralla Shire Tree Master Plan
  • A Uralla Town Centre Urban Design Study
  • Plans of Management for Alma Park and Mt Mutton
  • A Uralla Cooling Action Plan
