## Summary

In May 2022 the Landscape Foundation of Australia received a NAB Foundation Community Grant for a project in Uralla, in the New England region of New South Wales: *Keeping Uralla Summers Cool*. Working with ZNET Uralla, the aim was to build the community's understanding of what rising temperatures and extreme heat mean for health and the local environment.

Through a series of workshops, residents identified ways to build resilience and keep people safe and comfortable in hotter conditions. Along the way the group reached a conclusion that reshaped the project: the issues were broader than keeping Uralla cool. Shade, streetscapes, open space and the general environment were all bound up with how liveable the town would be in coming decades — and the report was retitled accordingly.

For councils and community groups elsewhere, the value lies as much in the method as the findings: a documented account of how a small community moved from general concern about heat to specific priorities it could advocate for, with assessments carried out by workshop members themselves.

## The five priority actions

- A Plan of Management for the sports complex
