Submission to Treasury — 2024 Budget

ProgramAdvocacy
Submitted toAustralian Treasury — pre-Budget submission, 2024 Budget
Extent6 pages

Summary

Conservation alone is no longer enough; large-scale restoration and repair are urgently needed. Yet, the submission argues, budget allocations for restoration in Australia have been grossly inadequate to avert massive biodiversity loss, or to meet Australia's commitment under Target 2 of the Global Biodiversity Framework — at least 30 per cent of degraded ecosystems under effective restoration by 2030.

LFA therefore supports substantial new funding in the 2024 Budget, carried across the forward estimates, for a national program of ecosystem restoration and biodiversity management. The submission identifies seven action areas for new or increased funding, and places the case within LFA's wider 'Valuing Nature' priority, including its submissions on the Nature Repair Market.

Key recommendations

  • Fund a large-scale national program of ecosystem restoration and biodiversity management to achieve Target 2 of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
  • Accelerate the review of Australia's Strategy for Nature with increased funding.
  • Fund high-priority restoration works now on public and private lands and waters.
  • Develop a National Nature Investment Strategy for public and private investment in the nation's biodiversity restoration commitments.
